Rome Prosecutors open investigations on
immigration policy

(ANSA) – Rome, June 1

Rome prosecutors have begun investigations on Italy's decision to return to Libya 227 illegal migrants rescued in the Mediterranean last month, judicial sources said on Monday. Under the controversial initiative, which sees a key part of a landmark accord with Libya implemented for the first time, migrants are rescued in international waters and taken back to Libya where humanitarian organisations can vet their asylum claims.

Providing figures on the so-called 'push-back' policy, Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said last week that 471 migrants had been sent back to Libya from May 6 to 10, after the launch of the policy. Prosecutors were acting on a complaint filed by the Radical Party and a group of MPs of the centre-left Democratic Party after a first group of migrants were returned to Libya, said the sources. The complaint filed against the Italian interior ministry and the government urges prosecutors to look into the legitimacy of the government's new policy. The complaint argues that some of the migrants included a number who had the right to claim asylum. The initiative has been contested by the centre-left opposition, the Catholic Church, humanitarian organisations and the United Nations. The government says the initiative is in keeping with European Union directives and has urged the EU to help deal with the immigration emergency in the Mediterranean.

The global decline of tourism

To understand why we spoke to Claudio Mancini, head of tourism for the Lazio regional government. 2008 was a difficult year for tourism worldwide. The global decline also affected Rome – but the Eternal City was hit much less harder than many other European capitals.
